Rozelle Sportsmanship Award for exhibiting exemplary sportsmanship during the regular season and FHSAA State Series. Each year the award is presented to one school from each of the four sections in all seven classificationsin whose total sports program best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship by its coaches, players and spectators. Hialeah Gardens High School will receive a $500 award and a commemorative plaque from FHSAA, a testament to a well run, successful sports program at the newly opened school. The school recognizes its athletics director Carlos Ochoa and his coaching team, who managed to keep the teams united while players attended two different campus during 2008-09 school year.
The school received strong support from the coaches, players, city officials and the whole Hialeah Gardens High School community which help turn a challenging year into a spirited and rewarding experience for all the students.
These students have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Membership in the NHS will continually challenge them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. We are very proud of their commitment and service to others. A special thanks to the Gator Chapter of the NHS for their devotion to service. The FCAT Writing results are in and our 10th grade Gladiators have once again made us proud. The scores showed that 79% of our 10th graders scored at least 3.5 on the Writing test. It should be noted that our students’ average score exceeded both the District average (76%) and the State average (77%). This is quite an accomplishment for a school in its inaugural year and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students, teachers and parents.

The PTSA is proud of all students that placed their best effort on last year’s PSAT exam. The highest scoring student, one of the three students named above, will receive recognition at the Academic Awards.
The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) measures the skills students have developed over the course of their education. These include: critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills and writing skills.
The PSAT is the best preparation for the SAT. Students take the test in the tenth grade and sooner because they’ll get personalized feedback on the academic skills needed for college. By taking the test before eleventh grade, students have more time to develop these skills and to begin the college planning process.

YOLANDA ESTUPINAN, 10th grade, Hialeah Gardens High: Spending quality time at her father’s bedside is how Yolanda likes to end her day. Yolanda’s life changed when her father suffered a tragic accident at work, leaving him in a coma. While Yolanda’s father was changing a street light, a truck ran into him. He was transported to Jackson Trauma Center. He remained in a coma for many months and Yolanda stayed by his side and served as interpreter for her mother on legal issues, including permission to put him on life support. Although he regained consciousness, the road to recovery has been long and painful for the family. According to doctors, he will probably not regain full eyesight or movement of his limbs. Even though it has been hard to concentrate in school, Yolanda has maintained excellent grades, and at home, she cooks and cleans. Yolanda is vice president of the Key Club, where she serves the community. She attends district meetings and participates in a monthly community project. One project that lasted two days was at a local animal shelter where Yolanda cleaned cages, bathed animals, played with animals and provided them with love. On another occasion, the project entailed bringing toys to children with disabilities for the nonprofit organization Christmas Smiles. During the holidays, the club sponsored a food basket for a needy family. Yolanda has perfect attendance and is involved in gymnastics, ballet, school plays and modeling. This summer, she plans to donate her time in the neonatal unit of a hospital.

• Special Recognition for February in the middle or high school category went to ESTHER ACOSTA, 10th grade, Hialeah Gardens High:
Esther is a young lady who likes to roll up her shirt sleeves and help others. Her actions go back to her elementary years when she would assist her teachers in special education classes for an hour a day. Esther was a role model to students who suffered from autism and Down syndrome, reading stories, helping with their class work and playing games. A member of the Earth Club, Esther was involved in creating a butterfly garden dedicated to a girl from her school who died and loved butterflies. Throughout her school years, she’s won awards and honors including Principal’s Honor Roll, Citizenship Honor Roll and perfect attendance awards. In eighth grade, she served as vice president of the National Junior Honor Society, where she spearheaded a canned food drive, sang Christmas carols to the elderly at senior-citizen homes and stayed after school to help teachers grade and file papers. Since second grade, Esther has taken advanced and honors courses and plans to graduate in the top 5 percent of her high school class. Due to financial difficulties in her household, Esther goes every day after school to her mother’s job to help her clean offices. Her mother is working two jobs — 10 hours a day — so Esther is more than willing to ease the financial burden. In spite of many late nights, she manages to do her homework and maintain excellent grades. In the future, Esther plans to attend the University of Miami and pursue a career in Obstetrics.
HGHS is thankful of Gilbert Soles’ participation in the Fairchild Tropical Garden’s “Faichild Challenge 2009″, in the Research Projects Showcase (Solar Invention Category) held on Saturday, April 18, 2009. He designed and built a solar paneled grain grinding machine, which would be very useful in developing third world countries. No doubt that this young Gladiator’s innovative mind will impact the lives of many with his contributions for a more efficient and productive society. Gilbert Soles will receive an award on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 at Fairchild Tropical Gardens at 1:00 pm.
On April 30th, 2009, some peer mediators from Hialeah Gardens High had a chance to go to Westland Hialeah High School to be trained to peer mediate. I got a chance to go to this workshop. Even though I had been a peer mediator the previous year this workshop refreshed my mind on what I learned. Also I learned some new techniques. Today in the workshop Ms. Tamika was the speaker and she talked with us about mediation, confidentiality, communication skills, resolutions, different type of conflicts, and finally the definition of conflict. We also participated in some activities such as writing what was our point of view on different conflicts teenagers face and writing some solutions for these conflicts. We also shared our point of view of the difference between court and mediation and we practiced paraphrasing. Finally, we got into a group of four, made up a conflict and two peer mediators practiced mediating the problem. The day was very fun and interesting. This made me realize that I do want to make a difference in our school and that’s why I want to become a Peer Mediator of Hialeah Gardens High School. Last but not least, a special thank you to Coach Binder/Trust Counselor, Mr. Napoles, and Ms. Nadel.

April 25th, 2009, was Global Youth Service Day. As a school we participated in Hands on Miami to help on this day. Global Youth Service Day is one of the biggest days where many people come out and serve their community. Hialeah Gardens High School got lucky to have one of the representatives of Hands on Miami, Alexandria Segovia [[my best friend]], at our school. So the day commenced with me waking up at 7:00 a.m. to be at school for 8 a.m. Then we headed to Amelia Earheart Park. From there we signed in and then we chose for our school to all help on the Mountain Bike trail. After we got separated into groups, and each group had a different job. Some people cleared the trails while others put mulch on the trails to make it better for the riders. In my group we had Felipe, who is in a wheel chair, Gilbert Soles, Maricelys Amaya, and me. We got to do a whole bike trail on our own. Although it was challenging helping Felipe maneuver up hills and around some corners but we got through it. I was inspired on how even though he was in a wheel chair, he still decided to come out and help with this hard and physical work. On the bike trail we moved all the obstacles that may affect the bike riders, like twigs hanging from a tree to bottles on the ground. It took us the full three hours to do the whole bike trail, but we finished it. Something that really surprised me was when we were picking up trash and a bike rider stopped and gave us thanks for what we were doing and this touched me. I didn’t think that somebody was going to stop from their time riding their bike to thank us. This was an awesome experience because I learned that team work is very effective on a job. Finally, I give thanks to Alexandria and Ms. Nadel for sponsoring the trip for our school and giving us an opportunity to make the world a better place.
Thank you for the opportunity and for the support of the PTSA with paying for the bus and snacks.

Dear Gladiators,
I want to thank those at the 9th grade campus for making our first Open Mic Day a success. Thank you for allowing the students to leave your classes to participate in this event as well as those classes that were invited to co
me and share in the experience. It is events like this that help our students blossom.
The English Honor Society did a great job sponsoring the event, which featured some guest performances by Andrew Gonzalez on guitar, Cindy Perera and Jackie Lopez on vocals. We also had several students recite poems they either wrote themselves or read from other authors.
I wish we could have an Open Mic Day at Goleman, but after speaking with Anabel Parra the only day available would be at the end of May, which is too late (considering final exams).
I look forward to having this event next year in our own Media Center and know that it will be an even bigger success.
Sincerely,
Catherine McDermott
English Honor Society Sponsor

But despite the fact their permanent school won’t be completed until August, she wants the temporary classroom at Hialeah Gardens Middle to feel like home.
”Whatever I can do to make the learning experience more meaningful for the children, I’m going to do it,” she said.
Louis was Hialeah Gardens’s 2008 teacher of the year and is the North Central Region’s nominee for the Francisco R. Walker 2010 Teacher of the Year.
”She’s willing to reach out and impact students in as many ways possible,” said Niurka Davis, who was on the school’s nominating committee for teacher of the year.
Born in the Bahamas, Louis moved to Miami at age 13. She holds master’s and doctorate degrees in education from Nova Southeastern University.
Louis, 27, realized she wanted to be a teacher as a junior in high school.
”I was given the opportunity to be a teacher for a day, and I found out that one of the most popular boys in my school didn’t know how to read,” Louis said. “I was surprised that this student was allowed to fall through the cracks.
“A lot of times we tend to forget about them, and kids in high school still need to be nurtured.”
”Her teaching style stands out,” Davis said. “She knows what students need.”
She has also published a book of poetry, Thoughts of a Restless Mind, which is available on Amazon.com.
”The inspiration is life and all that it entails,” she said. “Poems range from family and love to teaching and exercising.”
Louis said she is also inspired by her fellow teachers.
‘There are times when I walk into other teachers’ classrooms,” Louis said, “and I see how I can work with other strategies and step up my game.”

• RICK BRAVO, 10th grade, Hialeah Gardens High School: Rick is an excellent student who has received Honor Roll for all of his scholar years and is currently taking all honors courses. He is president of the Science Honor Society and was one of 30 students selected to be in an Advanced Placement Psychology course. But what really defines Rick is his participation in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). In 2007, Rick was invited by his Civil Air Patrol Colonel to make a speech honoring the World War I and II veterans on Veterans Day. In 2008, he was nominated for CAP Cadet of the Year and was promoted to Sergeant of the Squadron No. 286. When he participated in the CAP Special Activities Competition, Rick was awarded the top score earning the Top Board Award. He was also selected to participate in the Air Force Space Command Familiarization Course at NASA. Rick also recently became a member of the Color Guard and Drill Team where he will compete against other squadrons throughout the state. In addition to his CAP duties, Rick helps every year at his local parish during the carnival festivities collecting funds for those in need.
DANTE GARCIA, ninth grade, Hialeah Gardens High School: Dante learned at the young age of 12 one of life’s most valuable lessons; the value of giving and helping those in need. Dante vividly remembers encountering a homeless person who was malnourished, suffering from dehydration and in need of medical attention due to broken ribs. Noticing the man was in pain and had difficulty breathing, Dante, who had been saving money for the past two years totaling $162, gave it all to the homeless man for food and proper medical care. Dante has also had his share of sorrow with the death of his aunt and grandmother. His first thought was to console his mother, which was not an easy task because Dante was devastated as well. According to his mom, Dante was her pillar of strength during the worst time in her life. He is also an excellent student and is taking honors courses. He is on his high school baseball team and has received awards for baseball. Even though Dante is busy with school and sports he doesn’t neglect his community. Dante volunteers for Hands On Miami.
